Optimize Content for AI Search Results
Reading Time: 9 minutes

If you’ve noticed more “AI Overviews” or AI-generated answers at the top of search results, you’re not imagining it. Google’s AI Overviews, OpenAI’s browsing results, and other emerging platforms are changing how content is served to those looking for answers.

These AI-driven search models don’t just rely on traditional SEO signals. They scan the open web, summarize information in real time, and pull from a variety of sources like Reddit, YouTube, Medium, and even PDFs. So the way you structure, write, and distribute your content must evolve to stay visible and competitive.

How to Optimize Content for AI Overviews and other AI Search Experiences

1. Write in a Structured, LLM-friendly Format

When writing for AI, think about how a language model reads your content. These tools don’t care about clever wording or marketing speak. Content format matters because they scan content for facts, structure, clarity and completeness.

To optimize content for AI Overviews:

  • Use bullet points and numbered lists to break down ideas and make them digestible.
  • Include clear section headers (H2s and H3s) to organize content logically.
  • Write dense, useful paragraphs. Don’t write 200 words for something that could be said in 75.
  • Explain concepts fully. Instead of just saying “AI helps marketing,” explain how it helps. Include an example and a mini case study if warranted.
  • Add a “Key Takeaways” section in bullet form to help AI pull out summaries easily.
  • Write your title tag to help AI determine if your content applies to the query.

This format not only helps your human readers scan and learn faster, but it also signals to AI that your content is structured and authoritative. This makes it more likely to be used in Overviews or AI answers.

2. Create Topic Clusters, Not Just Posts

One blog post on a topic is no longer enough.

To make sure your content performs well for AI Overviews, what really matters is having depth on a subject, not just scratching the surface.

How to build a content cluster:

  • Identify a core topic you want to rank for (say, “Artificial Intelligence in small business marketing”).
  • Create all the related subtopics that help bring the main idea to life (like “How AI Improves Your Local SEO”, “The Top AI Tools for Service Businesses”, and “Figuring Out Your Return on Investment from AI Marketing”).
  • Get all the posts talking to each other by making sure there are links between them – that way search engines and AI tools can easily make their way through the cluster.

Not only does that help LLMs get a good feel for how much content depth you’ve got, but it also keeps your human visitors around longer and helps build your brand’s authority.

3. Structure Your Content for AI Understanding

Structure is key. If AI tools can’t figure out how your content fits together and whether you’re trustworthy, then it’s unlikely you’ll be visible in search results.

Here’s how to make sure your structure works:

  • Make sure you are adding schema markup to all major content types: This helps Google and other AIs get a sense of what you’re about. Use this Schema Markup Generator tool to get started.
  • Have a FAQ section: Add questions and answers at the bottom of the page or make a separate FAQ page. The important thing is that you’re answering common questions directly.
  • Optimize your site’s crawlability. Use a website audit tool like Screaming Frog or Ahrefs to fix broken links, redirect chains, and blocked pages. And, make sure you’re not accidentally blocking search bots with your Cloudflare or hosting settings.
  • Audit and improve page load speed and mobile experience. If your site is slow or looks like it was made on a dial-up connection, don’t be surprised if AI Overviews ignore your content.

If your website is confusing, slow, or filled with duplicate content, it’s little wonder you’re not showing up on AI search results.

4. Earn Trusted Mentions and Citations

AIs generally learn from what is available to them on the public internet. If you’re locked behind a login screen, they’re not going to find you.

To get your content seen by more AIs in AI Overviews:

  • Keep the valuable content like blog posts, case studies, DIY guides, and FAQs out there in the open and not locked up behind a membership or login.
  • Publish some of your top content on popular platforms like Medium, Substack and LinkedIn Articles. These are the kind of places that the AI training systems tend to get content.
  • Use YouTube and include transcripts. AI can read the captions and use them to get a summary of what’s in the video.
  • Join in on relevant Reddit conversations and share your insights or key takeaways, especially if it’s an area where your business has some expertise.
  • When you do publish things like PDFs and whitepapers, make sure they’re easy to find and host them at a public URL when possible.

By distributing your content like this, you’re not only getting it out in front of more people but also teaching the AIs that your brand is active, open-to-business, and trustworthy.

5. Join the Conversation Where AI Listens

AI tools don’t just stop at pulling content from the usual internet websites, but they’re also finding content in communities, forums, and actual conversations between people.

The platforms that get you noticed:

  • Reddit: This is one of the most heavily scraped source for AI, so if you get a mention for your brand or content on here, it could end up in an AI Overview.
  • Quora: Write solid, detailed answers to real questions and then link back to your content.
  • YouTube: Keep video transcripts up-to-date and make sure the descriptions contain all the right keywords.
  • Slack and Discord groups: These aren’t always indexed but they do help you stay plugged into what your audience is really talking about and what they’re concerned about, which in turn helps you tailor your content to what actually matters.
  • Podcasts: Make those transcripts, show notes and summaries available on public pages.

The goal is to show up where your ideal customer is already talking because AI is listening too.

6. Create AI-Optimized Video Content

Video is becoming an increasingly important way to get your content seen in search results, with YouTube getting thoroughly indexed by Google, plus platforms like ChatGPT.

Tips for getting your video to show up well in search results:

  • Keep your videos short and focused, 2 to 5 minutes is ideal for a single idea, 10 to 15 minutes if you’re doing a walkthrough or something more in-depth.
  • Make sure you include transcripts and descriptions that are packed with the relevant keywords.
  • Don’t neglect your video’s visual identity. Clear and eye-catching thumbnails and titles matter, especially for clicks and search visibility.
  • Consider embedding your videos in the relevant blog posts. It’s a great way to boost both assets.
  • Use short explainer videos across social media like Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn, which can give you even more chances to get noticed.

Even if video isn’t normally your main format, throwing a few cleverly done clips together with transcripts can actually expand your brand’s presence in the AI search results.

7. Earn Mentions and Links That Matter

Backlinks aren’t dead yet, but the old way of quantity over quality no longer holds up. For AI tools, sheer link volume just doesn’t cut it anymore. Instead these tools are all about credibility and getting a mention from people who know their stuff.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind now:

  • Get your name in the papers. Aim for respected industry blogs, news articles and directories that don’t get ignored by search engines.
  • Work up a digital PR strategy. Get on podcasts, subscriber newsletters & even the occasional interview.
  • Work on getting your brand name out there in search results. The more people looking for you by name, the more trustworthy you’re going to look.
  • Get your customers and peers talking about you. Sites that can help here include those specialist forums like Reddit, X (Twitter) or a niche forum about a topic you know really well.

Getting a mention in the right places can still pay off in the long run, especially as search engines and the LLMs that power them, get better at recognizing quality.

8. Target the Questions People Ask AI

To be featured in an AI Overview, you need to answer the exact type of questions people are asking LLMs.

These include:

  • “What’s the best software for [problem]?”
  • “How do I get started with [topic]?”
  • “What’s the difference between [option A] and [option B]?”
  • “Is [strategy] worth it?”

Use keyword research tools, Reddit threads, and even ChatGPT itself to explore these natural language queries. Then:

  • Turn them into blog post titles
  • Use them as section headers
  • Answer them directly in FAQs

When you answer real questions well, you increase the odds of your content being surfaced in both traditional and AI-powered search.

9. Use the “Query Fan-Out” Technique

The Query Fan-Out technique is a powerful way to make your content more relevant to both search engines and AI systems by expanding a single user question into a network of related subtopics.

Query Fan-Out is when someone types a question into their favorite AI tool such as “How do I use AI in marketing?”, AI doesn’t stop there. It often tries to anticipate related questions the user might ask next. These could include:

  • “What’s the best AI marketing tool?”
  • “Can AI help with email campaigns?”
  • “How do you measure ROI from AI in marketing?”
  • “What are the risks of using AI in advertising?”

This is the fan-out. A single query expands into a cluster of follow-up questions, and AI Overviews aim to cover multiple angles in one response. If your content already answers these secondary questions, you’re far more likely to appear in those AI-driven summaries.

You can accomplish this technique two ways:

  • Write an in-depth blog post that answers the main query and includes well-structured sections for each related question. Use clear subheadings (H2s/H3s) and bullet points to break things down. This format gives AI a clear structure to summarize and pull from, increasing your chance of showing up in AI Overviews for multiple search intents.
  • Create separate, interlinked posts that completely covers the topic. Start with one post that is an overview of the topic and then create standalone blog posts for each “fanned-out” question. Interlink these posts using anchor text and navigation elements. This creates a topic cluster that builds authority on the topic and improves crawlability.

This concept is also closely aligned with user intent so it not only helps your content get found in search and AI results, you also help the person looking for answers to their questions.

10. Monitor AI Appearance and Prioritize

Its a well known adage that “what gets measured gets managed”, though I have to admit it’s not always easy to get a handle on just how well AI is working for us. Yet there are some new methods emerging that might help:

  • Ahrefs now offers snapshot results for AI. This lets you catch a glimpse of where your content might be getting picked up and getting some traction.
  • Google Search Console is still a top tool for monitoring the changes in impressions and clicks for the search terms you’re trying to target. Pay attention to the trends.
  • And then there’s the competitive analysis. Take a good look at your priority pages and see how they stack up against your competitors. If they’re showing up in AI Overviews and you’re not, then that’s a pretty clear signal it’s time to step up your game.

And remember, managing your AI strategy also means being intentional with where you put your effort. So pick the 5 – 10 pages on your site that are most critical to getting those inbound leads, conversions, or building your brand authority , and build your AI content strategy around those first.

AI is The Future of Search

If you want to show up in AI Overviews and other machine-curated search results, you need to stop writing for Google and start creating content that’s easy for language models to digest, summarize, and trust.

That means:

  • Structuring your content
  • Writing clearly and with authority
  • Publishing in the right places
  • Being present on the open web

Embrace these tactics early to get ahead of the curve in AI-driven search.
