Thanks for this post! I have been trying to explain to someone for six months why her website did not automatically pop up on the first page of Google! She is contemplating spending a lot of money, and I'm afraid results may be limited. There are some good SEO companies out there, but the bad ones prey on consumer ignorance. Yes, the sad truth is there are quality SEO firms that don’t prey on the small business owner, but the small business owner doesn’t hear about them on time. Knowledge is power in this case especially. Do your homework first, spend money second.

I couldn’t agree more on what you told this so-called SEO ‘expert’. It’s amazing how many incompetent companies and people exist on this market. In most cases, they have completely wrong information about what’s really good for getting better rankings, and in some of the cases, they intentionally mislead their clients.

Of course, there are many professional firms doing a great job on SEO, but I think for a small business owner it’s better if he or she just browse on the internet for a couple of hours, collecting free info on search engine optimization. This way they won’t be scammed so easily.

Just think about what it does to the small business owner that doesn’t know that they are giving them false information and taking their money. With limited marketing budgets, the small business owner cannot afford to waste money on something that doesn’t work.

I recently went for a job at an SEO company and I couldn’t believe the outdated and completely wrong things they were doing to their sites. It’s not a surprise when they try to hire SEO’s for £7.50 an hour though….

Hey this is great. I'm glad you put down what was said and highlighted this here. These SEO companies surely thrive on getting peoples hopes up by making them think they can surely get them number 1 spot for any keyword phrase. But what you correctly pointed out is that when it comes to SEO, nothing is guaranteed. While it's likely, there are indeed many contributers to take into consideration. Funny how he ended the call short the first time when you corrected him about how Google doesn't use meta tags anymore. And he still said they do!? That's really bad. Working with small business owners in the home services industry has opened my eyes. They seem to be the most at risk because of the competitiveness of their industry and lack of knowledge of search engine marketing. Fortunately for my clients, I have warned them not to take these calls and if something seems interesting, to pass it to me for review. But others need to proceed with caution when it comes to sales people guaranteeing first page positions in Google.
