Hi Vaneeesa,

Time does fly – I can’t believe that post was 3 years ago! I also
can’t believe I’ve been blogging that long (or longer) as well!

Truthfully using excerpts is just a matter of preference. I just
updated my archives and main blog page to use excerpts because I found a
nice way to lay them out with featured images. There is an SEO benefit
of not having full posts in archives due to the potential of duplicate
content penalties. The main index page (or the home page) of your blog
is questionable on whether having full posts hurts your rankings.

But you’re right – it may be more aesthetically pleasing to have your
main blog page show excerpts so the visitor can quickly scan what you
offer. Now with featured images, it can appeal to many more people –
those who skim, those who are visual, those who are more linear and want
to read more.

Quality UI/UX supports your marketing efforts. If I reach a blog and it is
hard to find what I need, I’ll leave so no matter how good my marketing
is, how my blog projects itself to your audience is critical to its
success.

Cheers!

Hi Debra, what a wonderful blog moment when your 3-year-old post talks about something on my mind today! :)

Do you have further thoughts on Full Post vs Excerpt? In thinking about it from a UI / UX perspective "rather" than a marketing perspective... although I'm not sure there's a difference... hmm...

Anyway, to my structured, modernist eye, I just feel that a home page giving me a "menu" of excerpts is so much more compelling, powerful, engaging, useful... SO... I'm surprised by how many blogs, including quite good ones, seem to not use excerpts... I wonder why? Did they not get the memo? Or are there Full Post advantages I'm not seeing? Or just a different aesthetic I'm not seeing?

Thanks Debra!
